What Is StabiliTrak?

When detecting a difference between your vehicle’s intended path and actual path, the system will apply individual braking force on each wheel to keep your vehicle stable and on course.

Some may confuse StabiliTrak with the Traction Control system. Both systems aim to improve vehicle stability and safety. However, Traction Control is used when accelerating on slippery surfaces like sand, mud, ice, or snow, while StabiliTrak helps drive during difficult steering maneuvers, such as cornering or sudden lane changes.

Yes. You can still drive it, but it is important to take caution and adjust your driving behavior accordingly. 

When the StabiliTrak system malfunctions, it may not function properly or may be disabled completely. This can potentially affect your car’s stability, especially during severe driving maneuvers. So, have your car inspected and serviced as soon as possible.

What Causes the Service Stabilitrak Message to Come On?

The “Service StabiliTrak” message can come on due to various factors. Some common causes include:

Malfunctioning Sensors

The StabiliTrak system relies on sensors to monitor your vehicle’s dynamics, such as wheel speed sensors, steering angle sensors, and yaw rate sensors. Any faulty sensor can provide inaccurate readings and make the system malfunction.

Faulty Hydraulic Modulator

The hydraulic modulator is responsible for controlling brake pressure during the StabiliTrak operation. If it fails, the system will disable and trigger the warning message.

Electrical Issues

Faulty wiring, loose connections, or a blown fuse can disrupt communication between different components in the StabiliTrak and lead to a system malfunction.

As the message suggests, the cause lies in the StabiliTrak system. However, when working at the garage, I found that the problem usually stems from the engine. 

The StabiliTrak system activates when your RPMs aren’t consistent. So, any issues with your car causing fluctuation in RPM, such as misfires and pre-detonation, can trigger the message. 

Thus, don’t forget to check spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel pump, fuel filter, throttle body, or throttle position sensor.

Environmental Factors

Extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain, snow, or ice, can affect the performance of the sensors. In such cases, the warning message may appear temporarily until the conditions improve.

How to Diagnose and Fix Service Stabilitrak

To accurately diagnose and resolve the issue, take your car to a qualified mechanic or an authorized service center. However, you can use a diagnostic tool to identify the precise cause of the warning message and perform the necessary repairs yourself. Follow the steps below:

Step 1: Restart the vehicle

Sometimes, a temporary glitch or sensor error can trigger the StabiliTrak warning. Try turning off the engine, waiting a minute or two, and restarting the vehicle. This may reset the system and clear the warning message.

If the issue persists, turn to the next step.

Step 2: Check for loose or damaged connections

Step 4: Repair malfunctioning parts

Once you find the problem, make repairs immediately. If you cannot handle it yourself, consult a mechanic.

Step 5: Reset the Service Stabilitrak light

Once the underlying issue is addressed, it’s time to reset the light by using the scanner to clear the trouble codes.

• Select the “Clear codes” function on the scanner.
• Restart your car and drive for 50-100 miles. The light then automatically goes off.
